Google Bard: The Experimental ChatGPT

Google's experimental conversational AI chat service is called Bard. The main distinction between it and ChatGPT is that the information used by Google's service will come from the Internet.

• Is Bard unfettered?
Google hasn't indicated that it will charge for use as of this writing. Despite its cloud computing business, Google has never charged clients for services. Currently, it is assumed that Bard will be incorporated into Google's default search engine. For now, access to it would be unrestricted.

In a statement from Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Bard was introduced. Even if Bard was a brand-new idea when it was first announced, Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), released two years earlier, was the technology behind the AI chat service at launch.

The most recent large language model (LLM), PaLM 2, which was presented at Google I/O 2023, powers Google Bard.
Bard will be considerably more productive, function at a much better level, and correct prior difficulties. Thanks to PaLM 2, a more developed version of PaLM was launched in April 2022.

LaMDA's lightweight model was adopted in the first iteration of Bard. Because it uses fewer processing resources and can scale to accommodate additional users.

On March 21, 2023, the previous Google Bard queue opened up. It granted access to a select group of US and UK users on a rolling basis.

Google revealed at Google I/O that Bard would soon support 40 additional languages, including Korean and Japanese.

What is the controversy around Google Bard?
Google's Bard had a launch, as a demonstration in which Bard provided false information on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Google tweeted a demonstration of the AI chat service with the challenge, "What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?" to introduce the service. Bard retorted, "JWST took the first pictures of a planet outside our own solar system." People picked up on the factual errors in the output answer right away.

A Google spokeswoman told ZDNet that the incident "highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something we're kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program."

• The actual performance of the chatbot also led to lots of negative feedback.

In ZDNET's opinion, Bard also lagged behind more established rivals in terms of responsiveness and had a lengthier wait time. It didn't automatically integrate sources, and couldn't answer simple inquiries. In comparison to ChatGPT and Bing Chat, Google CEO Sundar Pichai referred to Bard as "a souped-up Civic."

Google's LaMDA received criticism prior to the introduction of Bard. According to ZDNET's Tiernan Ray, former Google developer Blake Lemoine published a document shortly after LaMDA was published. He suggested that LaMDA might be "sentient." After Google disputed the sentience and placed Lemoine on paid administrative leave before firing him from the firm.

The debate subsided. The transition of Google from LaMDA to PaLM 2 ought to help many of Bard's current problems.

• Why did Google choose this time to introduce Google Bard?

ChatGPT is well-received since its launch. ChatGPT has over a million users less than a week after its debut. The investigation by the Swiss bank UBS indicates that ChatGPT is the app with the greatest rate of growth.
